Another busy week has flown by in Year 4. As we have started looking more at what people in some places need to to do to access water we have begun to look at how we use water in our own lives. The realisation that there is so little clean water available to vast numbers of people throughout the world has been enlightening and many of our students are now looking at what action they can take to use water more wisely. Through reading books about water distribution and usage we have been adding to our knowledge and thinking more about the plight of those not as lucky as we are. In connection with this we have continued our persuasive writing and some parents can look forward to a letter they will be receiving some time next week!
The focus in maths continues to be on number and securing our knowledge of place value while bringing in patterns. By looking around we can see many patterns, especially in nature. We can look for the rules that go with different patterns and then apply them to numbers and make wider connections. Experimenting with patterns in such a way is fun and helps to relate maths to the wider world. The children loved working in pairs to make patterns that consisted of sound and movement as a warm up to the more number related, logical group work they did. Pattern and function is the beginning of what is more commonly known as algebra. By understanding that patterns have rules the children can then start to apply and extend their understanding.
The slide show depicts many of the things that we have been doing in class and is a great way for parents and children to share the learning that is taking place.
