Dear parents,
This semester we have been doing more speaking and listening activities in class, and in order to encourage the students to engage in attempts to use the language outside the classroom I will be giving them small vocabulary notebooks to take home and bring back to school every day. The book will be used to record new and old vocabulary, 3 words a day with at least 1 new word. The words can be recorded in English letters and spelled in a way that would be easy for your child to read, what I will check later is if they got the correct pronunciation and the correct meaning.
They can work on learning the words at home everyday to help them remember them and in class they will be asked to share the word, its meaning and try to use it in a sentence- or at least explain the situation it could be used in.
Since we only meet 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, I will not be able to monitor the activity everyday so I will need your help to make sure it is done; A note/reminder on the fridge, mirror or house/bedroom door would be a good idea.
Encourage your child to ask Arabic speakers for meanings of certain words and record them- this will help them learn to inquire and search for information instead of waiting for it to find them.
Finally, they were advised last semester to label things around the house with Arabic words to help them learn and maintain the vocabulary they learn in class, if you are new to KICS or Sudan or just interested in doing that again, please send me a list of words in English of things you have at home that you would like to label in Arabic and I would be more than happy to translate them for you and add the transliterated version for your reference. You can do this via email at: lama.masri@kics.sd
If you have any questions or inquiries please feel free to contact me.
Mrs Lama
