Weeks 5 and 6 in Year 4
During the last two weeks we have focused on changes that can be brought about to create greater equality of access to fresh water throughout the world. While trying to come up with possible solutions we have looked at and reflected on some of the work already being done in developing countries by organisations such as WaterAid and Waterorg. We have further learned about how some people have been living with limited water for many generations and the wide ranging effects this had had on their health and welfare. To see the ways their lives have changed since being assisted into getting wells and taps has helped us to realise that it doesn't take a lot for this to happen; just the initial funding and a desire to create a partnership with the affected people.
During the latter part of this week the children have planned and created a variety of presentations for their summative task to show and share their understanding of the central idea. They will assess themselves against a rubric which they use to guide their thinking after we have shared with each other at the beginning of next week.
Our reading and maths focuses have continued along the same lines as previously. In maths we have moved onto using number patterns with two step rules, applying letters and numbers to colour counter patterns and identifying missing numbers and rules in tables. Now that we have iPads available it has been fun to use some websites to learn interactively. After continuing to read non-fiction books relating to water issues there have been tasks to follow up and promote deeper thinking. Some of the learning engagements that have been done are: identify the main idea, give an opinion, record interesting facts, form research questions and explain the significance of specific vocabulary. Higher level thinking has been necessary during these tasks.
Next week we turn our focus to 'How we Express Ourselves' through our beliefs and values. It is going to be an interesting experience when learning about our similarities and differences and what makes us who we are, spiritually and culturally.
